The mission of ASMSO is to advance and encourage excellence in safe medication use by providing communication, leadership, direction, and education among its members.
Under the authority of the ASMSO Board of Directors and direction of the Professional Affairs Committee, ASMSO is pleased to announce that the FSMSO Recognition Program is now accepting nominations. Being a Fellow of the American Society of Medication Safety Officers (FSMSO) signifies that you have achieved expert level experience in the practice of medication safety.
In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act (FDAAA) was passed as a means to enhance the post-marketing authorities of the FDA in regard to drug safety. The FDA now has the authority to require post-marketing studies or clinical trials for medications that they deem necessary.
As a safety leader, are you responsible for:
•Championing your institution’s medication safety program, including medication error data management, trending, and benchmarking?
•Conducting and implementing findings from RCAs and FMEAs?
•Developing process changes to improve medication safety?
With the release of Improving Medication Safety in Community Pharmacy: Assessing Risk and Opportunities for Change, community pharmacies now have access to a coordinated, extensive set of tools designed to reduce medication errors. The Risk document is designed to help community pharmacies take a process-driven, system-based approach to address this critical issue.
The ISMP Guidelines for Standard Order Sets has been developed
to help organizations ensure that the elements of safe order communication have been followed when designing paper-based or electronic order sets. The guidelines focus primarily on medication orders within order sets but also cover general aspects related to the design,
Celebrate by taking the “Patient Safety IQ Quiz”
(OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. – March 5, 2010) The Joint Commission is marking National Patient Safety Awareness Week from March 7-13 by helping patients and their families become better informed and more involved in their health care with a patient safety quiz.
Do you have a true passion and interest in medication error prevention? The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), a leader in patient safety, is seeking a pharmacist or nurse with a graduate or advanced degree, minimum of 5 years of clinical and managerial experience and a current license for a full-time position in its respected consulting group.
ISMP’s Safe Medication Management Fellowship is a unique 12-month program beginning each July that educates a healthcare practitioner in error prevention and safe medication use methods. Please note that the application deadline for the fellowship has changed—applications for the 2010-2011 fellowship are due January 31, 2010.

Horsham, Pa.—The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and the American Society of Medication Safety Officers (ASMSO) have signed an agreement for ISMP to provide organizational management services for ASMSO.
This year we will only have one medication safety networking session at ASHP MCM in Las Vegas which will be for Medication Safety Officers (MSO) and anyone interested in medication safety. We hope you can attend.
